In the early-to-mid 20^th century, the Barri Gotic, or Gothic Quarter, underwent an extensive planned renovation to bolster Barcelona’s reputation as a tourist Mecca.  The resulting mishmash of gothic, neo gothic and medieval architecture is controversial but undeniably striking.  A long walk around the neighborhood is a must-do for any visitor to Barcelona, but don’t be surprised if you lose your way on the unpredictable, winding cobblestone streets.

Near the apartment you’ll find dozens of boutiques, bars, cafes and restaurants that cater to the gamut of tastes and budgets.  Also nearby is the legendary La Rambla pedestrian street, on which locals and tourists alike gather to people-watch and mingle in the tree-shaded cafes.  The street ranges from upscale near the Plaça de Catalunya, the central square where you’ll find several luxury hotels, to slightly seedy near the monument to Christopher Columbus, where El Raval’s red light district tends to expand at night.
